Jaken is a short emp who always follows Sesshomaru because hes his like slave or servent.Jaken is abused by Sesshomaru sometimes but seems like hes always loyal to Sesshomaru. Although sometimes he may seem like a coward hes not, look at Myoga he runs everytime Inuyasha is in a battle but Jaken doesnt ever run he actually helps sesshomaru!!! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.49.43.13 (talk • contribs)

Jaken is definitely not a kappa. In the episode "Chokyukai and the Abducted Bride" there is a kappa, and it looks totally different from Jaken and the other examples of his race.
What is he then? Do you think he's a reptilian demon or some kind of froglike amphibian?

- The Japanese wiki article doesn't identify Jaken as anything, which it probably would if he was as popular a creature as a kappa is. He also seems to lack a kappa's distinctive head-plate and affinity for the water. If you wanted to guess at what popular beastie he is, he could just as easily be a ko-tengu, despite the lack of wings. I think he's just something Takahashi made up.
