Jake in Progress is an American comedy series broadcast on ABC. It began in the 2004-2005 television season. The main character is Jake (John Stamos), a New York City publicist-to-the-stars who tries to change his womanizing ways as he tries to find the woman of his dreams. Stamos' co-stars in the show are Naomi (Wendie Malick), Jake's boss at the Magnum PR Agency; Adrian (Ian Gomez), Jake's best friend; and Patrick (Rick Hoffman), the performance artist who always appears at the most inopportune times.
The show was originally conceived as a real-time comedy; the first season was to show the first date of Jake and a woman. This was dropped during development, and the show became more conventional and episodic. The first aired episode reflected the original plan, and covering the first half-hour of a date.
Averaging only 5.5 million viewers in its first season, it was surprisingly picked up for a second season for 2005-2006. The season two premiere episode aired on January 9, 2006, immediately following the first episode of Emily's Reasons Why Not. Both did poorly in the ratings; ABC immediately scheduled a rerun of The Bachelor during their timeslots for the following week, reduced the order for new episodes of both series, and put them both on indefinite hiatus. [1] No additional episodes of either series have been aired, and ABC confirmed on May 13 that Jake had been cancelled.
Producers of ER originally planned to add Stamos to the cast for the 2005-06 TV season, but the surprise pickup of Jake in Progress for a second season curtailed these plans until that series was officially cancelled. Stamos later joined ER for the 2006-2007 TV season.
