Chinese Americans I've talked to have pretty consistently distinguished (at least in talking about the present day) between "tongs" (which they see as essentially criminal enterprises) and "family/benevolent" associations (which they do not). I'm sure that the lines have been kown to be blurry; this article suggests that the terms are interchangeable. Can anyone elaborate on this? -- Jmabel | Talk 02:25, 14 January 2006 (UTC)
