I had the honor of meeting Jabbo about a couple years before he died. He was living at 24 5th Avenue in Manhattan, and Lorraine Gordon was there too in his little apartment. In his closet were a bunch of old horns. He let me play his euphonium--I played him the theme from Peter Gunn which I remembered from high school basketball pep rallies. That horn was--maybe still is--mounted over the bar at the Village Vanguard. Ironically, I ended up moving into that very building in 1990.
