I think it's to help us see that the item in question (whatever it is; I haven't looked!) is four match heads by four match heads in size - a single match would be tricky for some people who have trouble comparing size by sight alone. Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry 03:24, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

Quite, one match would have shown the size, and many make it a little more interesting than the cliched match picture. It makes a nice pattern too, and obviously got the picture noticed! Phooto 06:44, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
