[edit] images on Category:Youth_organizations

Why do all the UK scouting images apear at Category:Youth_organizations? j-beda 19:35, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

As Category:Youth organizations is at the bottom of the image's page. You can edit this. Computerjoe's talk 19:48, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
How? If I click through on one of the images, such as Image:Uk-scouts-sc-cl-pos.gif I get to a page that at the bottom does in fact list it as being in the Category:Youth_organizations, however when I then click on "edit this page" and go to http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Image:Uk-scouts-sc-cl-pos.gif&action=edit there is no reference to Category:Youth_organizations that I can see. What am I missing? j-beda 19:56, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
I looked in Template:Scoutlogo in case it placed it in Category:Youth_organizations, but it seems not.
Image:Scout-uk-map-county-berkshire.gif has {{scoutlogo}}, {{Category:Scouting}}, {{Category:Scouting in the UK}}, {{Category:Royal Berkshire, Scouting in}}
I can see why you're lost! It has to be hiding somewhere. Good luck Fiddle Faddle 21:17, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
anyone else have any ideas? j-beda 23:49, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
Quite a quandry, but i'd suspect that people over at the CC might have a clue about it as that is where the image exists. I'd say take this to the Village pump wp:VP possibly even the WP:VPT for a wider view though. -- Wirelain 00:52, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
  • Here's what's causing all this. Rather than use square brackets around the categories, the entries have the curly brackets that are used for templates. I changed the brackets on Image:Scout-uk-map-county-berkshire.gif and Image:Uk-scouts-brand-logo.gif, and they no longer appear on Category:Youth organizations. I was able to look inside the {{scoutlogo}} template, but that doesn't seem to provide the link. It may be because the "Scouting" category is a subcategory of "Youth organizations". I've gone as far as I can to figuring this one out. Fluit 02:16, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
Bingo! Thanks Sean - I had noticed the curly brackets, but had not tried changing them to see what that would do - I haven't played with any wiki image things and didn't want to step on anyone's toes with trying things out... j-beda 02:53, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Deprecating categories

Hiya, I saw that you added a category deprecation notice to one of the "Educational institutions founded in <year>" categories. Could you please link on the page, or point me at the discussion where the consensus was reached to do this? Thanks. --Elonka 16:31, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Hi Elonka. Darned if I can find the discussion - and in fact I don't actually know that one took place. I just started cleaning up a bunch of the ""Educational institutions founded in..." categories, and a number of the century and decade ones (but not all) had the depreciation notices - so when I put together common formats for the century/decade/year categories I included the wording. Thus, even if there was a discussion about it for Category:Educational institutions established in the 20th century for example (which I cannot find, but the notice is there from the start), it might not have been "proper" for me to extend that to the other centuries. j-beda 16:52, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
Hmm. Well, if it were my call, I'd say that it's probably best to keep it as "individual year for 20th century", and "by decade or century" for earlier ones, unless we can prove a consensus. But I have no strong feeling on it. Did you check to see if there might be a "WikiProject" for schools or education? There might be something there. Or at least it'd be a place to try and ensure consensus. --Elonka 20:54, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Category:Educational institutions by year of establishment

Since you've done a lot of work in this category space, can you offer your opinion on Category talk:Educational institutions by year of establishment ? Thanks! -- Usgnus 11:40, 2 June 2006 (UTC)

Greetings. I've noticed that you have re-categorised St Paul's School (and possibly others?) from Category:1509 establishments to Category:Educational institutions established in the 1500s. I understand there has been some discussion regarding the Category:Educational institutions by year of establishment which I am not especially looking to join. However, for those looking at what happened in 1509, as your changes relate to the 1500s and not the year 1509 they will have lost access to the information via the 1509 establishments category. In later years, where there is an educational institution establishments category for a single year, which is a sub cat of the establishments category for that year, no such problem occurs. I have added Category:1509 establishments back to the article on St Paul's School. Greenshed 16:20, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

I removed the Category:1509 establishments when I moved it to Educational institutions established in 1509 , since that was a subcategory of 1509 establishments , but when the year categories were depreciated, it looks like User:Usgnus did not add the year establishments categorie to the article when he moved it to the decades or centuries category. So in my defense - it wasn't me what done it... I don't know if Usgnus has since taken any time to make sure that the decade/century members are also in the approrpiate year establishments j-beda 20:20, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

Looking at some of your recent contributions, you may want to add your name to the list of participants over at WP:EiC. (Your edit of {{Canadian School District}} is what caught my eye.) --Stephane Charette 19:17, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

Please don't move articles by copying and pasting their contents, because this way the history will be left behind in the original location instead of being moved with the article.
