'consequences of Tippu Sultan's Palakkad invasion.' News spread about his gruesome killing and or convertion into Islam with the prisoners of the war. He used to ask the prisoners " do you prefer sward or cap " "sward" means the prisoner will be instently killed and "cap" means he will be forcefully converted to islam, circumcised, compelled to eat cow meat and live as slaves. When he attacked Palakkad, several tamil bhramins and Ezhavas who lived in and around Palakkad fled to Trichur and other southern parts of Kerala. They settled near Pudukad. A large Ayer settlement formed at Rappal on the banks of river Kurumali. The ezhavas settled around it , at Nedumbal, Muthrathikara, Nandikara, Panthallur, Mattathur etc. These people choose their villege name at Palakkad as their House name. Machatt, Kallikad, Thattamah, Pallethery,Vadakkunnalath etc are some examples. These families have only 200 Years history and population reduces to few couples at Tippus era. fortunately when Tippu reached Trichur, he got news that the British attacked Srirangapattanam. Tippu returned back , killed in the battle and never returned. People rejoiced at Palakkad and Trichur. Earlier due to the hatred twors Tippu sultan, people christened their dogs with the name "Tippu". By the time Tippu killed and the news reached southern part of Trichur, people settled at the new land converted the forest and barren land into fertile estates. They didnt take chances to face the uncertenity of returning back to Palakkad hence they continued to live at the new pastures.
