Istanbul Football League

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Istanbul Ligi was founded by James Fontaine and started with the 1904-05 season with only four teams as "Istanbul Sunday League". It was the first league organisation in the Ottoman Empire (later Turkey). This league lasted for 55 years (four of the seasons had never been completed). The name of the tournament was changed at first "İstanbul Friday League" in 1912, after "İstanbul League" in 1923. The name of the tournament later changed and became İstanbul Professional League in 1951-52 season.
