Island View Beach was discovered on the eastern shore of the Saanich Peninsula, near Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, by James Douglas (governor) in the latter half of the 18th century. Located east of James Island, to locals it is known as the "Beach of Destiny". It is not often that one can visit the beach without discovering an inner truth about themselves and about the earth. Located at Homathko and Puckle Road, a campsite is also available year round.[1]
Tourists should be aware that there are off leash dog restrictions from June 1st to September 15th. Dogs should be kept on leash in beach and picnic areas and are not allowed to stay overnight. Island View ("I-View") is a BC Regional Park, therefore facilities are located for those who are in need of garbage cans and or washrooms.Island View Beach has ramps for those who have difficulty with stairs, and a boat launch for access to Haro Strait and the Cordova Channel. There have been over 40 sightings of the sea creature (serpent) known as the Cadborosaurus. The beach also contains an abundant source of natural modelling clay, beach goers are welcome to help themselves for a price of $15.00 a handful, if caught stealing they will have their hand cut off.[2]
Island View Beach is home to many rare and beautiful plant and bird species. It is built on a miraculously natural and fragile sand dune. Some of British Columbia's most threatened shorebirds, such as the Oystercatcher, are found here. [3]
