rumors that bit was staged for publicity. [edit] question about an Olympic medal
Although Vaziri was often billed as an Olympic Medalist, a search of 1968 medal winners would show that this was a "work". That isn't to say that he wasn't an accomplished amateur wrestler. Of course, separating truth from fiction in the world of pro wrestling is seldom an easy task.
His supposed Olympic background has frequently been discussed on the message board of Wrestlingclassics.com, which is an excellent source for finding what is legitimate and what is worked.

The official Olympic website has a solid database of who won which medals during each Olympics. For 1968, Iran won several medals (including one gold in freestyle wrestling), however none of the medals were one by anyone by the name of Vaziri --I simply added the link to the text, adding nothing else. --- Bobak 19:38, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

Why was he on jerry springer. Saying that he was popular and appeared in his name and boots are intresting facts, but appearing on jerry springer is traditionally a very bad sign.

I recall reading a looong time a go in the Boston Globe that the Sheik was stopped by the police and had to give his real name, which was not "Ali Vasari" or anything that sounded Iranian or Arab.

I cannot find the news article on this, but I can confirm it. I worked with his other daughter Tanya. (Although I am sure this is a violation of "own research" rule.

Khosrow Vaziri → Iron Sheik (or The Iron Sheik) — Vaziri has been known as The Iron Sheik for over 25 years (except for a brief period in 1990-1991 when he was Colonel Mustafa. - Oppose as long as this stage name is not used to the exclusion of his real name. Shaquille O'Neal is known as Shaq much of the time, but that doesn't belong as more than a redirect, and the same is true here. Indexing the redirect would eliminate any perceived problems. - Shaq is just the nickname of O'Neal. Vaziri has only used Iron Sheik in public for over 25 years (except for a ~1 year period when he was Col. Mustafa). This would be more like Snoop Dogg. TJ Spyke 22:45, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
- Oppose This is an encyclopaedia and should have the guys's real name. I know he goes by the Iron Sheik moniker professionally but we're not writing an Apter mag. He isn't really a sheikh, he didn't really want to destroy Hogan and take the title back to Iran, he wasn't really going to sodomise Brian Blair in the middle of the Pontiac Silverdome in front of the biggest wrestling audience of all time. - There is no policy or guldine that says that we should use real names. In fact WP:COMMONNAME supports the move because he is best known as the Iron Sheik. Also there are other people who are not listed uneder the real names such as Snoop Dogg, Ice T, and a few other wrestlers one of which is Hulk Hogan. I have also yet to see any of these moved because of the possibility the use of their stage names would cause people to think that their personas were 'real'. Anyone reading the article would reaize that was not the case. This probably sounds like a crazy debate to have, but the recently deleted "Michael Richards Conflict" was removed on the grounds that it was "not needed and probably not true." I saw the clip on Iron Sheik's site, and he did in fact make those statements. Whether it's "not needed," however, I guess can be up for debate. On May 6th, the Sheik verbally attacked the Ultimate Warrior at a fan convention in New Jersey. [1] According to reports, the Sheik's agent thought it would be a good idea for the Sheik to approach the Warrior and shake his hand. When the Sheik did so, the Warrior said that he would not shake a hypocrite's hand. This made the Sheik livid, and caused him to launch a tirade against the Warrior and Sheik's own agent, Eric Simms. The Sheik removed his coat and asked the Warrior, "Do you want to do anything about it?" When someone at the Warrior's table threatened to call security, the Sheik responded with, "Fuck you and fuck the security!" The Sheik then turned his anger on Simms, calling him an "asshole" and telling him that it was his fault the incident happened since he was the one who asked the Sheik to come shake Warrior's hand. After Simms repeatedly asked him to calm down, the Sheik slapped him hard across the side of his face and said, "Don't fuckin' tell me again son!" The Sheik slowly walked back to his booth (walking with a noticable limp) and could be heard screaming obscenities as he did.

I can understand the policy of YouTube being a questionable source of proof, as it is largely homemade videos. However, shouldn't an interview with the man, speaking the words attributed himself, be an exception?

[edit] Bad Writers Making Edits
Guys, if you're going to edit this page, please make sure you know what you're doing. Almost every day I see people coming to this page and making edits that sound awful. You all know what I'm talking about. If you don't know how to write, don't make any edits to this page. Whoever added all of that info about the Sheik hating Hulk Hogan just because he is friends with Brian Blair obviously didn't have a clue how to write. It ruined the entire flow of the article. Hogan and Sheik have also gotten along with one another as well. In fact, in Hogan's autobiography, Hogan says that Sheik went backstage to congradulate him, and their is a You Tube video showing them standing together at a 2007 convention tooKevin j 20:27, 22 October 2007 (UTC).

Although I'm not sure of the veracity of this, The Iron Sheik claims that his cousin is The Sheik (Ed Farhat) and his nephew is Sabu (Terry Brunk).
