From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Irish Champion Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race in the Republic of Ireland for three-year-old and above thoroughbreds. It is run over a distance of 1 mile and 2 furlongs (2,012 metres) at Leopardstown Racecourse in September.
It was first run in 1976 as the Joe McGrath Memorial Stakes, becoming the Phoenix Champion Stakes in 1984. The present title was introduced when the race moved from Phoenix Park to nearby Leopardstown in 1991 following the closure of its former venue.
