Ion notation

In astronomy, ionized atoms are referred to using notation of the form Chemical symbol - Roman Numeral. For example, singly-ionized Hydrogen is H II. Neutral oxygen would be O I.
Forbidden and semiforbidden emission lines are enclosed by one or two brackets. [Fe II] indicates forbidden singly-ionized iron emission lines, Ca III] would be semiforbidden doubly ionized calcium emission lines.
