In the U.S. state of Iowa, Interstate 29 is a north-south interstate highway traversing closely parallel to the Nebraska state line. Interstate 29 passes through the Omaha-Council Bluffs and the Sioux City areas. Interstate 29 follows a corridor that is generally within 5 miles of the Missouri River throughout Iowa.
[edit] Route description
Interstate 29 enters Iowa near Hamburg. It goes northwest to an interchange with Iowa Highway 2, then turns north. Near Pacific Junction, I-29 overlaps U.S. Highway 34. Near Glenwood, this concurrency ends and a new one with U.S. Highway 275 begins. The U.S. 275 concurrency ends upon entering Council Bluffs when I-29 meets Iowa Highway 92. I-29 is then concurrent in Council Bluffs with Interstate 80 in the southern part of Council Bluffs. They separate in southwestern Council Bluffs. I-29 then winds its way along the western and northern edges of Council Bluffs after separating from I-80.
North of Council Bluffs, I-29 runs concurrent with Interstate 680 between Exits 61 and 71. After Interstate 680 separates, I-29 continues on a northwesterly path towards Sioux City. At Missouri Valley, I-29 intersects U.S. Highway 30. At Onawa, I-29 intersects Iowa Highway 175. Near Sergeant Bluff, I-29 intersects a road which leads to the Sioux Gateway Airport. At Sioux City, Interstate 129 spurs off of I-29 to go west towards South Sioux City, Nebraska. This intersection also is an intersection with U.S. Highway 20 and U.S. Highway 75. After continuing towards downtown Sioux City on a northerly route, it turns west and exits into South Dakota via a crossing of the Big Sioux River.
