The International School of Beaverton (ISB) is a school in Aloha, Oregon, United States. It first opened in 2006. It is part of the Beaverton School District and is the only school in the district to offer only MYP (Middle Years Program) courses. It currently serves 6th through 10th grade, with 11th grade starting in the 2008-2009 school year. The Beaverton School Board is currently applying for International Baccalaureate status so that it can teach eleventh and twelfth grades as the Diploma Program.[1] If accepted, then the International School of Beaverton will be the only school in the district that is offering both the IB Middle Years Program and Diploma Program.

Contents

[edit] Beginning picnic

ISB began its first school year with a family picnic. There was a speech given by principal Shelia Baumgardner. There were performances by local Indian dancers, African musicians, and ISB's own Dragon Leaders. There was also international food to be purchased.

[edit] Classes

ISB follows the IB guidelines toward education. All students begin learning a second language. Currently the available languages are Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, and Spanish. The curriculum also includes humanities, mathematics, sciences, visual and performing arts, English literature, health, and physical education. ISB works in coordination with Beaverton School District's high school schedule, with classes beginning at 7:40 am and concluding at 2:05 pm. This schedule also incorporates an A/B day class order. Students are given one study hall (Access Tutorial, named so because students can go to a teacher for help during that time) per week and one advisory per week.

[edit] Extracurricular activities

ISB offers the following extracurricular activities (excluding HS sports)

  • Jazz Band
  • Model United Nations
  • Anime Club
  • Gay-Straight Alliance
  • Drama Club
  • Council of Six
  • Student Council (proposed)
  • Homework Club

Jazz Band - Open to all students except beginners, Jazz Band is an after-school program headed by Walter Bates, the band director. The band is smaller than a regular concert band and only has brass and saxophone instruments, in addition to guitar, bass, and a drumset. The band generally plays harder and more jazzy songs, hence the name. The band meets from 2:15 to 3:15 Mondays and Thursdays.

The ISB world store is open to students of all ages to work in. The store was founded by school mothers and offers a variety of gifts from throughout the world along with school supplies and snacks.

The ISB Emissary- The Emissary is ISB's school newspaper and is a high school student run organization. The paper focuses on current world events and things happening in the school. It also features an Ask Roxie column, a popular advice column. It began as a quarterly publication, but may become a monthly publication.

[edit] Diploma Programme

ISB is in the process of becoming a Diploma Programme school, so that it can teach 11th and 12th grade as well as 6th through 10th. It started the application in March 2006.

[edit] Rigorous IB Program
