[edit] Detective Inspector

Who are these people whose 'popular belief' is that Inspectors in GB police are all detectives?

It's a common mistake in American fiction, probably largely fuelled by a diet of Sherlock Holmes. -- Necrothesp 00:37, 9 February 2006 (UTC)

Hello, I'm confused about "Detective Inspector" (having heard the term in the British TV comedy The Thin Blue Line) and this would be the page to explain it. What is it? From the standpoint of an American, it not only seems silly to have a rank with so many syllables, but it seems contradictory: a detective would investigate crimes while an inspector would instead check up on police procedures and personnel. [edit] Female Inspector

I had a question . . is there a spelling change to the word when a female is an inspector? does it then become an inspectress? The reason i ask is because i saw a posting online for an inspectress/inspector job position and wondered if that was a real word. -- Thenewbritish 13:07, 2 June 2006

It is a real word, but is very rarely seen. A female police inspector has always been called an inspector (in the UK, at least). -- Necrothesp 01:06, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Queensland, Australia

The article on law enforcemnt in Queensland has a link to here for information on Inspectors. Shouldn't there be an explanation on Inspectors in Australian Police, at least? Akid 10:42, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
