Insound

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Insound is an online CD, vinyl and MP3 retailer. Located in New York, NY it focuses primarily on the sale of indie rock and music from other similar genres. Insound was founded in 1998, selling only physical products via mail-order. In October 2006 it began selling albums in MP3 format for download as well.

The website works like most standard online stores with the exception of their MP3 download service which is notable for its refusal to sell single track downloads. Customers may only buy complete albums and these are only available in MP3 format.Their decision to do this coincided with a campaign dubbed 'Save the Album.' The campaign featured a website with videos from acts including Bloc Party, The Walkmen, and Colin Meloy and was met with mixed press responses. [1][2]

In addition to their retail business, Insound has released several limited series of CDs called "Insound Tour Support." Each series was released in conjunction with a particular tour. Artists featured in these releases include Bright Eyes, Ill Lit, and Kilowatthours.
