RuneScape is a massive multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) set in medieval times, in which the objectives are to get strong, complete quests, and become rich. Twenty skills influence the ability to do various things. Each skill is used to help accomplish one or more of these three objectives. These skills have been classified into three general types: combat skills, moneymaker skills, and convenience skills.

[edit] Combat skills
The first, and probably most important, type of skill used in RuneScape is combat. This type of skill is mainly directed toward getting strong and doing quests that require defeating strong adversaries. There are seven combat skills in all, used by the three different classes, or types, of fighters in RuneScape: warriors, archers, and mages. Mages beat warriors, warriors beat archers, and archers beat mages, thus keeping a relative balance between the three classes. Some would argue that magic is the current killer stat. Mages can entangle an opponent, attack from a distance, and target groups of opponents with a single spell.
[edit] Shared skills
All three classes use these three skills: defense, hitpoints, and prayer. Defense determines how often fighters dodge attacks, while hitpoints determine how much abuse they can take before dying. When a player’s hitpoints reach zero, he or she dies. Prayer enables fighters to call upon the gods of RuneScape to gain temporary bonuses. Higher prayer ability grants fighters the use of stronger prayers, the strongest ones granting partial or complete immunity from all attacks of a particular type, depending on the attacker.
[edit] Warriors
Warriors specialize in close-range or melee combat. They use two warrior-specific skills, attack and strength. Attack determines how often warriors hit, and strength determines how high
they hit. Warriors get to use the greatest variety of weapons among the classes. Among these weapons are the mace, warhammer, spear, short- and long-swords, two-handed sword, dagger, and claws. The spear and dagger can be poison-tipped to make them more dangerous.
[edit] Mages
magic is one of the easiest skills to achieve. It is a very strong attack it is maybe the strongest attack. To attack with magic all you need to do is click on the book under the mini map of runescape you will find this on the right side up of the screen. you click on a attack and click on a oppenonent such as a goblin, cow, guard and so on. the attack had to be in coulour but you will need runes to use the attack you want to. or you can go on the combat page under the mini map also. but you have to be wielding a staff you can be wielding a staff such as a water staff it will give you infinity of the water runes but if you take it off it will take you ability away to have infinity of that rune. same as the fire staff, earth staff and so on. if you want to get your defense to a higher level you click on the attack in the right corner up. if you want to use the attack to only get your magic level up go to the right side on the bottom corner it will take you to a page. were you can choose the attack and have to have the runes and level to use this attack.
[edit] Archers
Archers, like mages can attack from a distance and use an obstacle to avoid attack, all you need to do to train this skill is a (bow which can be bought at lowes archer shop in varrock) an arrows(also bought at lowes) once u equip your bow and arrows just find a target and shoot away! archers also have different armors, such as leather made from cowhides, or the popular dragin hides, which are made from dragons there are also 4 different types of dragonhide:green, blue, red, black with black being the strongest and green being the weakest also, archers can use crossbows unfortunatley, only members can weild crossbows other than the normal and phoenix crossbow =[
[edit] Moneymaker skills
The second type of skill that can be used in RuneScape is a type called moneymaker, so-called because these skills can be used to make money. This type of skill benefits those seeking the goal of great riches, as well as those wishing to complete a great many quests. There are ten different moneymaker skills in all, one of which is also a combat skill. this sucks dick and doesnt help at all :P
[edit] Woodcutting/fletching
Woodcutting and fletching (bow- and arrow-making) also go hand in hand. Woodcutting, the ability to chop down trees, is required to obtain the wood used in fletching bows and arrow shafts. Players who fletch bows will buy wood from others so that they do not have to waste time chopping down tree after tree to get it. Those who fletch arrows might purchase arrowheads from blacksmiths, again to speed up the process of making the final product. Fletching and arrow heads are member only.
[edit] Cooking/fishing
Cooking and fishing go together as well. Cooking is used to cook food that can then be used to heal damage sustained in combat. Certain cooking levels are required to cook a certain fish, food, etc. Fish generally heal more hitpoints faster than other means the ability to cook better food. Players who do a lot of fighting will buy food so they can fight stronger opponents without dying.
[edit] Crafting
Crafting, supported by magic, mining, and smithing, is the art of making jewelry, pottery, glass, leather items, and magical battlestaffs. A high mining ability is required to mine the gold, silver, and gems used in jewelry. Good skill in smithing is needed to refine the gold and silver once mined. Rings and amulets made from gold and set with a gem can be enchanted with magic to have special properties useful in combat. Silver can be crafted into symbols of the RuneScape gods. These symbols can then be empowered by taking them to the appropriate in-game person. Crafting is also used to make leather and dragonhide armor for archers and battlestaffs for mages.
[edit] Herblore and runecrafting
The last two moneymaker skills, herblore and runecrafting, are valuable skills in their own right, supported only mildly by other skills. Herblore is the art of making potions that have various abilities, mainly giving a temporary boost to one or more skills. The ingredients used in these potions sell for a very high price, as do some of the potions themselves. Runecrafting, as the name might suggest, is the art of making the rune stones that enable mages to cast spells. Most runes are relatively cheap and not worth making, but two runes in particular are quite expensive. For this reason, some players will pay quite handsomely for help in making these runes.
[edit] Merchanting
Though not an official skill, merchanting is a highly effective way for players with a bit of cash to get richer. The rule of thumb when merchanting is to buy low and sell high, just as you would when playing the stock market. Some players have used this skill to obtain the most valuable items in the game, which have been discontinued by Jagex Ltd. and can only be purchased from other players. Merchants are not held in high regard by many
[edit] Convenience skills
The last four skills are called convenience skills because they have little use aside from making life in RuneScape easier. However, three of these skills assist in completing a handful of quests.
[edit] Firemaking
Firemaking is the ability to make fires using logs obtained from woodcutting. This is useful for cooking food without having to travel all the way to a stove, but not much else. This skill is highly regarded as the most useless skill in RuneScape, though it also has some special uses, such as lighting candles and other light sources.
[edit] Agility
The abilities of negotiating difficult obstacles and running great distances are the two benefits of a strong agility skill. Some areas require a high agility skill to reach, and running from place to place becomes progressively easier with each increase in agility. While a pain to improve, this skill can provide a great convenience when an obstacle is between where you are and where you want to be. Sometimes going around just takes too long.
