Following 30 years of linguistic field work among the Faiwol people of Papua New Guinea I would like to state that the street names in the town of Tabubil are Faiwol words or example Awon is the word for 'bird'. Faiwol has three major dialects. Angkiyak to the east, Faiwol in the center, and Wopkeimin to the west. Most of the landowners in the Ok Tedi mining area are Wopkeimin. The Ningerum language borders the Wopkeimin to the south and there may be one or two of their villages that are part of the Ok Tedi mine area.
The written alphabet for the Faiwol language received final approval in 1974 after much testing and many revisions. This is the result of research and scientic design of Charlotte Mecklenburg and many speakers of the Faiwol language. There have been a number of books written in the Faiwol language including readers for literacy. In 1995 the New Testament was completed and is the largest of all the books written in the Faiwol language.
