[edit] Queens Boulevard Line and inactive connections

Another editor moved the start of the Queens Boulevard Line to north of 50th Street, and changed the color of the yard leads from light red to dark red.

Whichever way the QB Line connection is portrayed, it's somewhat deceptive. The QB Line actually begins at the interlocking between 42nd Street and 50th Street. The upper level station at 50th Street is part of the Eighth Avenue Line, and the lower level station is part of the Queens Boulevard Line. (See New York City Subway chaining.) This is one of those cases where the start of the line in railroad terms is contrary to what the rider physically sees.

On the other NYC Subway templates created so far, the light red line color has been used to portray non-revenue connections. Where the light red is used for yard leads, it means those connections are non-revenue, not that they're inactive. This convention could be changed, but if so, all the templates should be updated accordingly. Marc Shepherd 11:30, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

Hi, that was me. Yes, you're right that there's no good way to represent the junction with the Queens Boulevard line. I should have known that this was a judgment call, and left it alone. My apologies.
I'm a little dismayed at the use of light red for non-revenue track; Wikipedia:Railway line template makes it clear that they're to be used for disused track, and I really don't think any project or subproject ought to be using a different convention. Part of the whole point, I think, is to use the same conventions globally, so that anyone familiar with the template usage can correctly interpret any diagram on sight. I didn't change any of the other templates because they're not on my watchlist and I don't know where they are; I'll refrain from seeking them out until we come to a consensus here. —CComMack (tc) 05:16, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
Unfortunately, a lot of the usage is open to broad interpretation. But I agree with you, the original standard seems to be pretty clear that light red is for disused track, not for a revenue/non-revenue distinction. I would be fine with going back to bright red for the yard leads in all cases.
The other open question is whether these diagrams are actually going to be used for anything. As yet, no articles include them. Marc Shepherd 15:16, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] 13 Nov Revisions

I've redone the Queens Boulevard connection in a way that sort of adheres to physical reality; unfortunately, there are no icons for interchanges at minor stations as there are for major stations (as I've put in at West 4th St). I've removed the "ellipsis"-type track, since those are ostensibly for "interrupted" track, not track that continues off the diagram. I've made the 6th/8th relationship at West 4th a little clearer (at least, in my opinion), including an interchange. I decided not to "discuss" this because I haven't significantly changed the diagram, but if anyone wants to discuss it, you're welcome to. Larry V (talk | e-mail) 05:21, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

I've replaced the ellipsis track, namely because it looks a lot better. Unfortunately, there are no interchange icons for minor stations (like 50th Street). Larry V (talk | e-mail) 09:20, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
