[edit] Rewrite section on motivation?

It seems time to clean up this page a bit. The motivating example is controversial, and uncited (it is certainly not from his 1991 book). I vote to remove the whole section completely and to start all over again, possibly using a simpler and less controversial example. Section 1.1.4 of Walley's book (page 4) would be IMO a good starting point. Any other opinions out there?
