[edit] Source?

Once again, I have to ask: What is the source for this flag? Aramgar (talk) 17:32, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

It's depicted in the Catalan Atlas and in a fourteenth century Spanish document called the "Book of Knowledge of All Kingdoms". Orange Tuesday (talk) 19:26, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
The Catalan Atlas is a primary source. Do you have secondary sources for the widespread use of this flag within the Ilkhanate? We at Wikipedia must be careful to do no original research. I have noted over the past year that a large number of articles have flags based solely on this one primary source. The emphasis on flags within theses articles is very often anachronistic and probably a case of WP:UNDUE. This is an issue which needs to be examined more carefully. Relying on a single primary source is indeed a huge problem here. The Catalan Atlas can certainly not be considered reliable. In fact, large parts of such historic maps are usually plain fantasy, or at best compiled from heresay. We cannot assume that this flag was used by the Il-Khanate at all. Secondary sources are needed to confirm this reliably. Without those, the flag shouldn't be used in articles, if not deleted alltogether. --Latebird (talk) 08:11, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
Sorry. I didn't realize that the flag was so suspect when I made the image. I'll remove it from the Il-Khanate and Abbasid infoboxes.Orange Tuesday (talk) 14:38, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
I've fixed the image description to specify the source and its unconfirmed status. --Latebird (talk) 15:16, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
