The Swedish version of the worldwide TV format Idol, called Idol 2004. A jury of 4 music insiders visited 5 cities around Sweden: Stockholm, Göteborg, Malmö, Umeå and Karlstad. Many contestants were sad and angry about the jury's words about their talents and the Swedish press wrote scandals about their comments. One was about a poor girl was told: "You could sing in a choir on a boat, actually in Estonia, when it sank".
The jury took 40 contestants, that the public could vote on in 5 days, in the semi-finals. 5 groups of 8 contestants sang to the public and the 2 contestants with the highest phone and SMS votes were through to the finals on the same night. After the choosing of the 10 finalists, the jury also picked 1 "wildcard" of their choice, which this time was Lorén Talhaoui.
In the middle of the season, BMG released the album Det Bästa Från Idol 2004 which included covers of songs that the contestants had sung in an earlier show. That album became a big success and gained a Gold accreditation in Sweden.
The 2 big finalists were Daniel Lindström, 26, from Umeå, and Darin Zanyar, 17, from Vällingby. In the final, both men sang their versions of the newly written song Coming True, written by the Swedish composer Jörgen Elofsson. Daniel took the first victory and released the single on the same night, and it became the biggest selling single in Sweden in 2004 (Double Platinum). In the beginning of 2005, Darin also signed a contract with BMG, and has since become a big popstar in Sweden and Finland, just like Daniel. Later that year, also Nathalie, one of the contestants who was eliminated early from the competition, released her debut single Did You Love Me. In 2006, she has released her debut album Here With Me.
