I'm currently working on a script intended to create short articles on political parties on a variety of wikipedias simultaneously. However, in order for the technique to work I need help with translations to various languages. I've started an article on Cerball mac Dúnlainge who I understand is better known in Icelandic sources as Kjarvalr Írakonungr. I have a small amount of information on his appearances in Icelandic genealogies which I will add, but if anyone expert can contribute I'd be much obliged. Thanks ! [edit] Category sorting for patronymic names

Hello,

I'm just wondering if there has been any discussion about sorting in categories with regards to people with patronymic names. The standard Wikipedia sortkey of "Lastname, Firstname" seems a bit absurd in this case as we'd be sorting based on person's father's name. I looked over Help:Category#Sort order and Wikipedia:Categorization of people, but couldn't see anything about this case in particular. A quick glimpse at Category:Icelandic musicians for example shows that it's split between the two forms.

Perhaps we should add a paragraph to one of these pages about an exception for the patronymic names? If so, do we use the first name sortkey only in Iceland-related categories, or in all of them?

[edit] Icelandic naming conventions in an English-language encyclopedia?

I realise that it is good and proper to refer to people using their first name when doing so in the Icelandic language. It seems however to me a bit awkward to do the same thing in English-language articles in an encyclopaedia. The article on Geir Haarde, for instance, reads (to an English person) like it has been written by his friends or family members, and not by (presumably) complete strangers. Other articles, for instance Kristján Eldjárn (directly comparable because he does not have a patronymic surname, either), uses the surname or the personal pronoun instead. At least, we ought to have a consistent policy on how to refer to people from Iceland. My vote, for all it's worth, goes to following English rather than Icelandic conventions, and using the surname in encyclopaedic articles. --Thorsen 13:59, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
