[edit] Automatic qualification for hosts?
In reading the qualification procedures posted on iihf's website, there is no such provision. Canada qualified the same way as Sweden, Finland and Czech Republic--by being in the top 9 of the 2008 World Rankings. Any comments? Joel225sp (talk) 22:12, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
- This link states that the host nation for the Olympic games gets an automatic entry in all events. However, it is rather old (is for the 200 Olympics). The Curling wikipedia page states Canada gets automatic entry. I think this is fairly well known. I will continue to search for a bid for these Olympics. http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4191/is_20000912/ai_n9976793. As a side note, the Canada Men's team is automatically qualified due to its high world ranking. Though I have not hammered out the math, I am 99.99% sure the Women's team is in the same place. I will search for a reference for the 2010 games or figure out if the Women's team already qualified. That way the host reference can be removed since they qualified through another means. The host nation is allowed an automatic qualification in most cases--but there are exceptions. In 2004, Greece failed to qualify in men's and women's field hockey.

- I did the math and the Women's team as well as the Men's earned qualification through the world rankings no matter what. I eliminated the host designation, since it is still unsettled if they would have gotten the automatic entry had they not qualified. I hope this settles the issue. Slovakia and the U.S. are not assured of qualifying yet and in fact are more vulnerable than Russia in terms of the possibility of not qualifying. in the women tournament, mathematically speaking, if switzerland germany russia and china ended up the top four, finland could be bumped out of the top six, therefore they have not clinched a spot. Incredibly unlikely but true. The article says if Russia finish 16th and Latvia 1st in the 2008 IIHF Champships, then Russia would at worst be tied with Latvia for 9th place. With today's overtime win over Czech Republic, I'm pretty sure Russa are guaranteed entry into the next round, meaning the worst they can now do is finish 12th. It has to be noted that Slovakia and the United States could not have been qualified safely before the Worlds had started with Russia still being in doubt. Right now, the United States and Slovakia could conceivably be passed by Belarus, Germany, and Latvia, all at once, and then the two would be 10th and 11th. I'll give you, it's extremely unlikely, but the two are not safe (ESPECIALLY because Slovakia could be locked into the 13-16th place finish if they do not advance out of their group.) (Note: these are by the current numbers, assuming that teams that have qualified for the second group phase are credited for 12th place, and those who have not already qualified are credited for 16th place.) Next update: given the results, here's what we know.
The United States are for the most part safely in the tournament. The only way they do not qualify for the tournament automatically is if Germany beats Latvia in the gold medal game, Switzerland and Belarus meet in the bronze medal game, AND the United States finishes 12th. Any deviance from this, and the United States is safe.
In regards to Switzerland, so long as they get out of the group stage, they cannot finish lower than ninth, and thus they will be safe. There are still scenarios where they can qualify for the Olympics if they fail to make the knockout stages.
Slovakia should end up safely in, so long as they win their series with Slovenia. Of course, it can't completely be determined until some of the group stage matches are played. Wjmorris3 (talk) 03:22, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
If I don't get to it, USA is safe if they defeat Germany, as there is then no way that Germany can finish higher than the United States. Given that, USA cannot finish 12th, and thus they are safe. Wjmorris3 (talk) 00:15, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
Switzerland is now safe. The worst they can finish is 10th, but if they finish 10th, that means Norway made it to the final round, and not Latvia. To have missed out, they would have needed Denmark to beat Latvia in the finals.
In addition, Slovakia is safe, provided Denmark does not beat Latvia in the finals.
The last spot will go between Belarus and either Norway or Latvia, most likely. Latvia needs a semifinal appearance to get in, Norway a semifinal appearance and Belarus not finishing 9th (if Belarus finishes 9th, Norway needs the bronze.)
