The IBM 4683 was IBM's PC based point of sale (POS) system successors IBM 4683 and IBM 4693. It was introduced in 1991. The system consists of a PC-based controller and thin client based POS workstations. The system requires an IBM Computer which will act as what IBM refers to as a "Controller" or also more or less a server to be on the network. The 4694 is of the best-selling POS Systems on the world which is widely used in most large chain stores such as supermarkets and department stores.
