First Used In The Terminator

"I'll be back" is best known as a catch phrase associated with Arnold Schwarzenegger's title character from the 1984 science fiction thriller film The Terminator. In the original shooting script, the line was written as "I'll come back".[1][2] The American Film Institute honored the quote on 21 July 2005 by ranking it #37 on a list of the best movie quotes in the past 100 years of film.

A UK Film Council survey released on 8 November 2007 determined "I'll be back" to be the line from a film most commonly used in everyday conversation.

Ahhll-be-bahhk is often used as an impersonation of Arnold Schwarzenegger. It was often used to mock the five-time Mr. Universe and California Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Such jokes also include referring to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Governator.

I'll be back was used as a running joke concerning the Norwegian National Football Team during the time when their defense was under criticism. "I'll be back" in this context meant back as in defense.

We'll be back was used as a slogan by the Austrian Defence League during the Resistance movement of the 1930s to the Austro-fascist Patriotic Front.

It was recently revealed in the 2007 book The Star Wars Vault that in The Empire Strikes Back, the original response from Han Solo to Princess Leia's line "I Love You" was scripted as being "I'll be back".

In fact, "I'll be back" was first said in a 1973 Public information film called The Spirit of Dark and Lonely Water where the Grim Reaper (voiced by Donald Pleasence) warns children about the dangers of playing in and around water. The ad ends with the figure of death saying "I'll be back... ack... ack... ack...".

[edit] Variations

Since The Terminator, variations of the line have been used by Schwarzenegger in a number of other films in which he appears:

  • The Terminator (1984) - "I'll be back." Said by The Terminator after being denied entrance to a police station. The character returns by driving a car through the front door. Arnold has been quoted that he hadn't thought much of the line when filming the movie.
  • Commando (1985) - "I'll be back, Bennett!" (before being put on an airplane against his will.)
  • The Running Man (1987) - "Killian, I'll be back!" Said to reality/game show host Damon Killian (Richard Dawson), who does not expect Schwarzenegger's character to survive the broadcast. Killian's response is, "Only in a rerun."
  • Raw Deal (1986) - "I'll be right back" Said Mark Kaminski (Arnold) to Max Keller in 1:14:02 time of film.
  • Red Heat (1988) - Schwarzenegger's character says something in Russian, which the English subtitles render as "I'll be back."
  • Twins (1988) - "If you're lying to me, I'll be back!" (to the doctor who headed the experiment that created him)
  • Kindergarten Cop (1990) - "I'm back!" (returning to the classroom full of kids)
  • Total Recall (1990) - "I'll be back!" (being taken back to Recall)
  • Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) - "Stay here, I'll be back." Said by The Terminator to Sarah and John Connor during the escape from the Cyberdyne building. The character returns by driving a truck through the front door to rescue the human protagonists trapped inside.
  • Last Action Hero (1993) - "I'll be back.... Ha! Bet you didn't expect me to say that!" Said as Jack Slater, a character played by Schwarzenegger in a film-within-the-film. (Schwarzenegger also plays himself in the real movie.) Said to the child protagonist, who is bemusedly aware of Schwarzenegger's real-life use of the phrase.
  • Junior (1994) - After entering a house Schwarzenegger's character says: "It's nice to be back."
  • Jingle All the Way (1996) - In the movie Schwarzenegger says to his character's wife: "I'll be back with the doll later...".
  • The 6th Day (2000) - "I might be back..." (to pet store owner).
  • Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003) - "She'll be back," said by The Terminator in reference to the enemy T-X android, and "I'm back!" after flying a helicopter into the antechamber of a military bunker, and emerging from the wreckage. In the latter use, the phrase "I'm back" also refers to his return to loyalty and allegiance with the protagonists, after having been "corrupted" by the villainous T-X. Schwarzenegger also uses it in the DVD introduction.

Indeed, in addition to being the Terminator's catch phrase, it's also Schwarzenegger's personal catch phrase, and he tries to include it in most of his films and public appearances.

Schwarzenegger has since used the phrase during public speeches as part of his career as the governor of the U.S. state of California.[3][4]
