Hydrogen Electric Racing Federation

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hydrogen Electric Racing Federation (HERF) is a racing organization for hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicle, formed on 2007-1-10. The racing was founded by Peter M. DeLorenzo, and also acts as the league's president and CEO.

Where as conventional racing series focuses more on entertainment, DeLorenzo's vision was to create a racing serie that serves as a testing ground for future automotive technologies for street applications, similar to the automotive racing series in the past.

Various automotive companies such as Audi, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Nissan, Toyota, Bridgestone-Firestone and Michelin, as well as motorsport executives such as Tony George, Scott Atherton, had shown interest to the racing series.

[edit] Hydrogen 500

It is HREF's first racing series, announced by HERF on 2007-1-10. HERF wanted to run its inaugural race, The Hydrogen 500, at Indianapolis Motor Speedway or California Speedway, as part of a two oval event first season. Three races would run in 2010, including two ovals and one road course, followed by five rounds in 2011 that HERF hopes include an oval in Japan and a road course in Shanghai, China.

On 2007-2-7, HERF announced its initial formula for the race vehicle as follows:

The HERF racers will be closed-wheel machines with an on-track footprint similar in dimension to but not exceeding those currently used by sports car prototype racers. Key specifications include:

  • Weight: 900 kg (minimum)
  • Construction: Manufacturers' choice
  • Aerodynamic Devices: Allowed (although they cannot be movable or touch the track surface)
  • Suspension, Steering, Brakes, Controls: Manufacturers' choice
  • Power: 300kW/400 hp (minimum)
  • Battery Type: Manufacturers' choice
  • On-Board Hydrogen (compressed gas at 10,000 psi): Limited to 8 kg
  • Tires: One size package for oval tracks, one size package for road-racing circuits
  • Fuel: One manufacturer, to specification (from renewable resources)
  • Projected Lap Speed (at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway): 185mph+
