In music education composition instruction is the intellectual and visceral exploration of music composition. The main goal of study in composition is thus to produce music which is both intellectual and viscerally stimulating. It is distinguished from the study of music theory.

- Binding: final scores must be spiral or otherwise bound so as to lay flat.
- Cover page: the front outside of a score must display a cardstock cover page with the title, author, and instrumentation (ie: piano, full score).
- Title page: the first page within the binding exactly resembles the cover page except that the back contains a short biography/resume and performance notes.
- Score/part pages: score pages must be double sided, part pages must be single sided.
- Page turns: the layout of your score should take into account page turns and you should adjust the layout so as to assist performers with page turns.
- Page numbers: every page of the score must be numbered except for the first (where the number is replaced by the copyright).
- First page of score/parts must haves: Title (top middle), composer (top right), instrumentation (top left), copyright (bottom middle, format: C [NAME] [YEAR]), tempo text, metronome mark, and articulations and dynamics. Page number not needed.
- Clarity: stems must be at least an octave long, note head should be circles the size of a space, straight lines (bar lines, stems, beaming) should be drawn with a ruler, generally a piece should use only sharps or flats (never E# or Cb), etc.
