Husain Haqqani or Hussain Haqqani (Urdu: حسین حقّانی) (born July 1, 1956 in Karachi, Pakistan) is the newly-assigned Pakistan Ambassador to the United States, appointed by the PM Yousaf Raza Gillani coalition government on 3 April 2008. He will replace Mahmud Ali Durrani in Washington, D.C., who is set to become National Security Adviser to the Gillani government.[1] The appointment of Haqqani as the Pakistani top-man in Washington "is a clear indication to strictly follow Pentagon tailored-policy to keep on playing the role of frontline fighter against war on terror" according to Pakistani newspaper Business Recorder.[2] Barely a week ago his new assignment, Haqqani was designated as "Ambassador-at-large" by Yousaf Raza Gillani administration.
Haqqani has also worked as a journalist from 1980-1988, adviser to Pakistani Prime Ministers Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi, Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto from 1988-1996, Pakistan's ambassador to Sri Lanka from 1992-1993, and as an academic as Associate Professor of International Relations and director of the Institute for International Relations at Boston University. He is the Co-Director of the Hudson Institute's Project on the Future of the Muslim World. He holds B.A. and M.A. degrees from University of Karachi.
