Hurgoi (or Hurgoiu), Romanian family name, most likely originating from the Cluj County, in Transylvania, Romania. According to a well-known Romanian language linguist, Iorgu Iordan, in his "Dicţionarul numelor de familie româneşti" (Dictionary of Romanian Family Names), the name came from a musical instrument, "hurgoiu" - "horn made out of willow bark."
In Hungary, this name appears before 1804 in Gyula, Hungary, while in Békéscsaba even before 1763 (one Peter Hirgo, folk musician, was born 1763 în Békéscsaba and he died in the same city at 16 Octomber 1851).
The name also appears in Hungarian variants as Hurgoj, Hurguj, Hurguly, mostly in the Békés county in Hungary.
