Dr Humayon Dar (1970-)
Dr Humayon Dar (born as Muhammad Humayon Abbas Dar) is an internationally-renowned Islamic economist, Islamic banking expert and Sharia technician. Born in a small town called Gakkhar Mandi in Pakistani side of the Punjab province, Humayon Dar has emerged as an influential figure in Sharia advisory services for banks and financial institutions. He has played instrumental roles in development of Islamic economics, banking & finance as a recognised academic discipline in the UK universities. Currently, he is also associated with a number of academic institutions (like Cass Business School, City University London, where he serves as a Visiting Senior Fellow in Islamic Finance; University of Durham, where he serves as Visiting Fellow in Islamic Finance; Bahrain Institute of Banking & Finance; Institutte of Islamic Banking & Insurance London; and Universitas 21 Global Singapore).
Humayon Dar represents a rare breed of scholars trained in Islamic and conventional economics, and experienced in Islamic banking and finance. He holds a BSc (Hons) and MSc (both in Islamic Economics) from the International Islamic University Islamabad (IIU), where he benefited from the scholarship of some top Islamic jurists and Muslim thinkers, an MPhil and PhD (both in Economics) from Cambridge University where he conducted research on Islamic finance. His post-doctoral research has exclusively been on Islamic economics, banking and finance.
Dar has been associated with most of the current innovative developments in Islamic banking and finance, and is a leading player in the fast evolving Sharia advisory business. Some of his most recent contributions to Islamic finance are structuring an Islamic put option, Sharia-compliant short-selling techniques, and Islamic financial futures contracts. As Chief Executive Officer of BMB Islamic UK Limited and a member of its own and other Sharia Supervisory Boards (like Allianz Global Investor and Hong Leong Islamic Bank), he is actively involved in enhancing Sharia authenticity of Islamic financial products. His endeavour was acknowledged by Euromoney in 2006 and 2007, when the team led by him received the “Best Islamic Advisory & Assurance” award for two consecutive years.
A champion of cooperation between Islamic and conventional financial markets, Dar is widely consulted by corporates, governments and regulatory bodies on matters related with Islamic banking & finance. He is frequently interviewed by both the print and electronic media, like The Guardian, Financial Times, BBC, CNN and numerous other local and regional news bodies.
Humayon Dar is married with two sons, Hasha (2001-) and Sheriell (2004-), and currently lives in London.
