[edit] Some of the manatee's favorite quotations:

  • "Wisdom, itself, is often an abstraction associated not with fact or reality but with the man who asserts it and the manner of its assertion." John Kenneth Galbraith
  • "We have no words for speaking of wisdom to the stupid. He who understands the wise is wise already." Georg Christoph Lichtenberg
  • "Invidious comparison -- that particularly American brand of envy which agitates citizens to achieve and acquire, and perversely propels the deranged to spoil or steal the power they conspicuously lack." Thorstein Veblen
  • "Only a person who despairs of himself and life can be sadistic. A happy, strong person could not be so." Karen Horney
  • "Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation." Oscar Wilde
  • "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds." Ralph Waldo Emerson
  • "No one can possibly achieve any real and lasting success or 'get rich' in business by being a conformist." J. Paul Getty

[edit] Old postcards

The old postcards I've uploaded are intended to give visual and historical interest to various town sites, which often have little otherwise. But should better images become available, by all means use them. And if that means discarding mine, no problem. The point is to make the most interesting pages possible, whether with antique or recent pictures.--Hugh Manatee 17:00, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Standish

Thanks for the image + edits. Appreciated! Doctuh (talk) 00:20, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

And thanks for taking the time to say so. As I find stuff, I add it. Best to you, --Hugh Manatee (talk) 11:21, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Tom

Thanks for the ref. I think I'll add some mention of NH to his Wikipedia page, since it just mentions LA at this point. --Ken Gallager (talk) 00:47, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Incidentally, his father was a teacher at the Exeter High School, so Tom appears to be a NH native. Glad to help.--Hugh Manatee (talk) 11:00, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Property Rights

Hello! I'm a Wikipedia-User from Germany and I've got a question regarding your image file of William Dean Howells: Do you know who took the picture? In the light of German property rights it's especially important to know when the person who took the picture died.

Kind regards, --82.82.102.172 (talk) 15:55, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

Howells apears to be about 38 years old in the photograph, which suggests that it was taken about 1875 when he had become editor of Atlantic Monthly. I don't know who took it, but that was 123 years ago, so I think it is safe to say that the photographer is no longer living. At any rate, it was taken before 1923, which means it has no copyright in the US. However, I can tell you where it came from, and perhaps you can find the information you seek there: The William Dean Howells Society

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Barnstable, MA Seal.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Barnstable, MA Seal.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

The following images also have this problem:

[edit] Image source problem with Image:Farnham's Cove, East Boothbay, ME.jpg

Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Farnham's Cove, East Boothbay, ME.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 20:45, 8 June 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Brianga (talk) 20:45, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

The image is from a 1907 postcard published by the Hugh C. Leighton Company, Portland, Maine. Because it was published before 1923, it is free of copyright.--Hugh Manatee (talk) 10:28, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
