Huawaizhidi (化外之地) is a collective term for the land outward of Chinese culture, which literally means outer fringe of Chinese civilization. Hua () is from Chinese character for culture (文化). The people in this area were called Huawaizhimin (化外之民), means uncivilized people.

These two words are sometime used together in Chinese documents as 化外之地、化外之民, mean uncivilized people in outer fringes of civilization.[1] Taiwan was presumable as Huawaizhidi (化外之地) in Chinese history and the Qing dynasty of China used this term for Taiwan.[2]
