The HTC Touch Diamond is a Windows Mobile 6.1-powered Pocket PC designed and manufactured by HTC. It is the first device to feature TouchFLO 3D - a new version of the TouchFLO interface, unique to the Touch family.[1] The HTC Touch Diamond will be available across all major European carriers in June 2008, and later in the year in other parts of the world. [2] The carrier bound names for this phone include T-Mobile MDA Compact IV and O2 XDA Diamond. It is the official successor of the HTC Touch.[3]

[edit] Design
Unlike similar touchscreen phones, HTC opted for resistive technology for the touchscreen rather than capacitive. The reason cited by Horace Luke was because the resistive touch screen is better for Asian language-recognition.[4] However, the buttons beneath the screen, as well as being pressable buttons, have capacitive touch sensitivity. This feature is used by the camera application to auto-focus the camera as a finger approaches to press the button that will take a picture.[5]
Another design consideration is haptic feedback that didn't make it to the final production.
Horace Luke (Chief Innovator Officer) also noted that this is their thinnest device that they have designed to date.[6]
[edit] Competition
The HTC Touch Diamond, like its predecessor, has been compared to the iPhone.[7] The release of the Touch Diamond will, like the release of the HTC Touch, be slightly before the release of the equivalent iPhone (in this case, the 3G version).[8]
The Touch Diamond is also being compared to the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1.[9] [10] Interestingly, both the XPERIA X1 and the Touch Diamond were made by HTC, run Windows Mobile 6.1, and have new user interfaces.
The recently released BlackBerry Bold (9000) smartphone is also considered to be a competitor.[citation needed]
In addition, the MiniOne is also a potential competitor from China Meizu. This "iPhone-like" smartphone will be released in July 2008. It suports GPS and it is planned to be marketed in both China and America.
[edit] Touch Family
HTC is in the process of building up a family of Touch products, of which the HTC Touch Diamond is the fourth member. The other members of the family, so far, are:
- HTC Touch, the first member of the family, featuring EDGE (2.75G) and the first version of TouchFLO
- HTC Touch Dual, very similar to the original Touch, with the addition of a keypad and HSDPA (3.5G), but removing support for wi-fi
- HTC Touch Cruise, an improved handset supporting 3.5G and having GPS capabilities.[11]
- HTC Touch Pro, very similar to the Touch Diamond, with the addition of a keyboard, a microSD slot, a camera flash and more ROM and RAM, but removing the 4GB internal storage
The family's slogan is Discover Touchnology.[12]
