According to The Netherlands, Queen Beatrix, whom states the origins of the Order in a presentation ceremony, the Order was founded in 1858 by King Willem III, who was Grand Duke of Luxembourg. FYI: I came across this Order via Military order that had the Order listed as English and founded in 1179. I have adjusted that page to reflect Queen Beatrix's information, but did not feel an agressive edit here would be productive. Although, I am very tempted to believe Queen Beatrix's information. - I fully agree with you that Queen Beatrix is speaking the truth, but then she is talking about her own Order of the Golden Lion! A House Order in the Netherlands that is an order of Luxemburg as well... There are a lot of lions in the jungle!
I am doubtfull whether an English "Order of the Lion" existed in 1179. It dissapeared from the list on Military Orders. I will look into it! Robert Prummel (talk) 16:11, 20 December 2007 (UTC)
