[edit] Citation needed on pronunciation?

I'm pretty sure simply going on the word of someone who's lived in the area his entire life would constitute original research, so how exactly can we actually get a valid citation for the proper pronunciation of Houma? eXonyte (talk) 16:33, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

It's a very unlikely pronunciation, as if it were two words: hoom AH. I don't care if it's OR, but I suspect whoever added it didn't know what they were doing. My apologies if it's correct, but we should document it here for the sake of future editors. kwami (talk) 16:57, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
I changed it to the pronunciations shown in Kenyon and Knott and in my Webster's Geographical. --Cam (talk) 20:08, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
I've had two friends who lived there, have visited there a number of times, and always heard it as HO-ma with both of the vowels pronounced as in Spanish; HOE-mah. -- Infrogmation (talk) 20:51, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
You mean /ˈhoʊmɑː/ instead of /ˈhoʊmə/? I never would've asked for refs for the current pronunciation, but that is a good ref for the rest of us. kwami (talk) 00:50, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
I'm sorry that I seemed to give off an offended impression. The predominant pronunciation in the area does sound more to me like /ˈhoʊmə/, although /ˈhoʊmɑː/ is also common. I just honestly had no idea how to make a citation on a pronunciation, not even thinking about a geographical reference like Cam mentioned earlier. Thanks! eXonyte (talk) 03:43, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
