The Romanov were a noble family who were related to the Rurik Dynasty through marriage. They were offered the throne and ruled Muscovy and then Imperial Russia from 1613 to 1762. The family eventually died out. Female-line descendants succeeded them as Holstein-Gottorp-Romanov and continued to rule till 1917.
