- Hot spot is one of the many names for a raw, irriated lesion that results from a dog constantly scratching, chewing, and licking at an area of itchy skin. As the lesion grows, secondary infection from opportunisic bacteria can occur, causing more discomfort and leading the dog to scratch and chew even more. Other names include mosit eczema, summer sores, acute moist pyoderma, acute moist dermatitis, pyotraumatic dermatitis, or acute pyotraumatic dermatitis. As one of their names suggests, it is more common in the summer; however they can occur at any time of the year. Many dogs that develop them have allergies; they are particularly common in dogs with flea allergies. But any sort of irriation to the skin can result in a hot spot.
