What is the basis of the claim of Horlicks as a sleep aid ... has this been proved?

I have read repeated references to Horlicks tablets included in the survival kits issued to RAF aircrews during WWII. I had assumed these were a water purification chemical (similar to Halazone) but I see know I was mistaken.
