Horning

Horning is an ancient village (population 1033[1]) in Norfolk, England within The Broads. Archaeologists have found earthworks there.

It is situated on the River Bure (pronounced "Burr") between Wroxham and Ludham, and a ferry plied across the river for more than 1,000 years. The ferry is now gone, but the Ferry Inn is still there to remind us of it.

Horning is very popular with boaters, and sailing regattas take place regularly on this congested stretch of the Bure. Many boatyards that specialise in used boats and boat hire have set up business here.[2] In July 2003, a woman died when she became trapped under a boat near Horning.[3]

The 13th century church of St. Benedict lies half a mile east of the village, and the tall tower of St. Helen's Church at Ranworth can also be seen across the flat landscape.
