Hong Kyung Min (Hangul:홍경민, born on February 9, 1976) is a K-pop singer known for his versatility. He is one of a few singers in Korea that is good at many different styles of music, from rock to dance to ballad. That is why his title songs on each album may have a very different sounds, which is very refreshing. He made his debut as a Rock-ballad singer in 1997 with the song “Now”. Hong Kyung Min's style of rock was much unlike any other rock singer. Different from rock singers with loud high-pitched tones, Hong Kyung Min's mid-to-low voice color and stable tone approached listeners with a more comforting sensation.
Although he was recognized as a talented singer with his strong husky voice successfully appealing to many music lovers, his place in the pop music market wasn’t significant in the beginning. However, in 2000, when Hong released his 3rd album with the title song “Shaky Friendship”, the response was great putting him on top of stardom. He gained major popularity with that hit song/album. His third album remains his best-selling, with 280,422 copies sold in its release year.[1]. Breaking away from the rock style of music, the successful factor of Hong's 3rd album was the converting of style to more Latin Dance music. As his new music gained more popularity, Hong Kyung Min was nicknamed as “Korea's Ricky Martin”. Since then on, Hong Kyung Min has been steadily popular among music lovers until today, even after a 2-year-hiatus due to serving in the military.
Having finished full military service in the end of 2004, Hong Kyung Min has came back with his 6th album, "Listen and Repeat" with a hit rock song, "Tonight". He then actively performing new tracks of his album in various broadcast shows and live stages. Now, Hong Kyung Min is mainly focused on ballads. He had released his 7th album, "Evolution of Rhythm" in September 2006 which is a Pop-ballad album. Before he went to the military in 2002, he had filmed a movie Emergency Act 19, a comedy about banning music from Korea. On SBS's New X-Man on November 26, 2006, he mentioned the film as something that he was embarrassed about, but remarked that it was hard to not watch it simply because it was so bad.
Hong Kyung Min had made his Japanese debut as both a singer and actor as he made an appearance in a movie “We Won’t Forget You,” released simultaneously in Korea and Japan, early in 2007. He also sang a song for the movie's soundtrack. The song Hong sang for the movie was recorded both in Korean and Japanese. Hong himself wrote the lyrics for the Korean version. The movie's original soundtrack was released in December 2006. In early 2006 also, he acted in MBC Daily Drama "The love that will not be stopped by anyone" with actress Lee Young Ah which is a romantic comedy series and in the end of 2006, he acted in a mini series, "Fugitive, Lee Du Young". January 2007, Hong Kyung Min acted in SBS Drama, "The Person I Love" along with Kim Dong Wan (Shinhwa), Han Eun Jung, Park Eun Hye, Jo Dong Hyuk etc.
On August, 28th 2007, Hong Kyung Min released his 8th album, "Music for My Life, Life for My Music" which is also a Pop ballad album, as the celebration for his 10th years debut anniversary this year. Composer Jo Young Soo, who is also a close friend of Hong Kyung Min, composed his title song entitled "Mot Nan I (Fool)". This song is quite different from all the songs heard from Hong Kyung Min. The harmonica blends nicely with the instrumental (background music) to bring out a sad melody. The 6th track of the album, "Neighbour People, Fighting!", was personally composed and written by Hong Kyung Min himself. It is the most up-beat dance song in this album and it gives out a meaningful message to everyone. There is a total of 12 tracks in this album that were composed by talented musicians.
