Homophilic binding is a common name for process that is involved in cell adhesion, also called cell-junction. Homophilic binding is a binding between two identical components of the cell junction. In the cell we have cadherins that are Ca2+ dependent like:
- tight junction
- adherence junction
- desmosome junction
The Homophilic binding is different from heterophilic binding in that the latter is a binding between 2 non-identical components of each cell, like Selectin or integrins.
Examples of Cell adhesion molecules involved in homophilic interactions include cadherins and members of the Ig-superfamily.
