This is also a common practice in lost-and-found situations. When someone finds a lost pet, they often hold back details about the animal that only its owner would know. Classified advertising or FOUND! posters on telephone poles. It's also common practice when claiming a found wallet or purse to ask would-be claimants for details of the contents.
