Herbert Holden Thorp is Chancellor-Elect of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, scheduled to assume his duties on July 1, 2008.[4] He is currently the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and the Kenan Professor of Chemistry at the university.[5][6] He received his B.S. in chemistry from UNC in 1986.[5][6] Three years later, he obtained his Ph.D. from California Institute of Technology, and was a postdoctoral associate in Yale University from 1989 to 1990.[6]

Thorp's research is primarily focused on developing a new biological applications of transition metal redox chemistry.
