Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India, Private Limited (HMSI) is the wholly owned Indian subsidiary of Honda Motor Company, Limited, Japan.[1] Founded in 1999,[1] it was the fourth Honda automotive venture in India, after Hero Honda, Kinetic Honda Motor Ltd and Honda Siel Cars India Limited.[2]
The entry of Honda into the Indian market as HMSI began with the launch of the Honda Activa, a 100cc scooter. A slightly modified trendier version of the Activa was soon launched, as the Honda Dio. Honda Eterno was launched thereafter to add to the portfolio of HMSI's scooters.
The Honda Unicorn was the first motorcycle released by HMSI. The Honda Shine has since been released.

Honda launched his gearless scooter in Feb/March 2008.The slogan for this is"Live your style". The specifications are Type:4 Stroke, Single Cylinder, Air-cooled, OHC, Displacement :102cc,Max Power: 7 bhp @7000 rpm,Max Torque:0.8 kgm @5500 rpm Transmission: V-Matic.

The Honda Activa is the first scooter model released by HMSI for the Indian market.[3] It was marketed as a family vehicle.

The Honda Dio is a stylish version of the Honda Activa, having almost the same technical specifications. The engine is slightly more powerful. The Dio is targeted at young people. Honda calls it India's first "motoscooter".[3]

Widely advertised as the "Geared Surprise"[3] prior to launch, the Honda Eterno is a powerful 4-stroke, 150cc scooter. The scooter is also much heavier than other scooters, making buyers wary. It incorporates advanced features for comfort and travel. Honda also claims that the Eterno gives the best mileage in its class.[3]

The Honda Unicorn is HMSI's first motorcycle for the Indian market. It is powered by a newly developed 4-stroke, 150cc engine and incorporates many cutting-edge technologies developed by Honda's international R&D team. The bike offers superior mileage in its class. The Unicorn is also the first bike in India to incorporate the advanced mono suspension system. The bike is touted as the "Flying Machine" by Honda.[3]

Marketed as the "Dream Machine", the Honda Shine utilises the newly developed 125cc Optimax engine, apart from a host of advanced technologies.[3] The motorcycle is targeted at the mid-range motorcycle segment.

The HMSI factory is built on a plot of 52 acres at Manesar, Gurgaon district of Haryana. Construction of the factory began on 14th December 1999 and was completed in January 2001. The initial production capacity was 100,000 scooters per year, which is currently 6,00,000 scooters. The motorcycle production capacity is 4,00,000 per annum. The initial investment was Rs. 215 crores and has now grown to 800 crores.[4]

HMSI got ISO 14001 certification in December, 2002. HMSI plans to use the PDCA cycle for its environmental management system.[5]
