AWM Caption: The Bathurst Class Minesweeper (Corvette) HMAS Wollongong was built on British account at Cockatoo Island Dockyard, Sydney, in 1941. In January 1942, Wollongong joined other RAN Corvettes in the 21st Minesweeping Flotilla at Singapore which carried out extensive minesweeping operations in the Singapore Sumatra area. After performing escort and evacuation duties, Wollongong was the last RAN vessel to leave Singapore before its capture by the Japanese. She later saw service in the East Africa-Madagascar-Aden area. Following the cessation of hostilities, Wollongong with her flotilla was despatched in September 1945 to Hong Kong for minesweeping and patrol operations before returning to Australia to be paid off and laid up.
