HIV Superinfection

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

HIV Superinfection is a condition in which a person with the human immunodeficiency virus acquires many strains of the virus. This may cause complications and resistance to medicines. There are 16 cases diagnosed worldwide so far.[citation needed] Many people who have HIV do not use condoms with other HIV-positive sexual partners, particularly gay, bisexual, and MSM men.[citation needed] These men then get more strains of the virus and their HIV may become resistant to treatment and escalate to so-called "full-blown AIDS" in as little as three months with or without treatment, foregoing the usual period of incubation and replication and period of viral undetectability.[citation needed] Getting another strain of HIV is known as reinfection. It is sometimes known as "Super AIDS."

[edit] In Popular Culture

  • Has been parodied on SNL as being called "¡Sida Fantástico!" in Spanish.
  • Mentioned in South Park during season 9 in the episode titled "The Death of Eric Cartman." When the character Butters thinks he is seeing dead people and hiding under a sink. Butters father tells him ghosts don't exist and that there is nothing to be afraid of except for Super Aids. "Just one teaspoon of Super Aids in your butt and you're dead in three years."
