- Description: Lieutenant General Hitoshi Imamura, Japanese Eighth Area Army commander, established headquarters at Rabaul in December 1942. His authority, extended over the Solomons, Bismarcks and the eastern half of New Guinea, was confined solely to Japanese Army Forces stationed therein.
