Hitomi no Catoblepas (瞳のカトブレパス Hitomi no Katoburepasu?) is a manga series authored by Yasuki Tanaka (田中 靖規 Tanaka Yasuki?). The manga began its run on May 21, 2007 in Weekly Shōnen Jump.[1], and finished after 15 chapters in September 3, 2007. The story follows the life of a young man named Tokio, who is a descendant of a legendary family of youma (demon) fighters. He has the ability to freeze time using the power of the youma in his left eye, Catoblepas. One day, he encounters a girl, Mīko, who becomes the target of a youma. Tokio, with his eye, intervenes and prevents the girl from becoming another victim of a string of mysterious events that have occurred in K City as of late. Little does Mīko know that Tokio is her next door neighbour. The 45-page final chapter will be featured only in the second volume, the publication date set to November 2nd, 2007.[2]

[edit] Characters
- Tokio Shimura (志村 時生 Shimura Tokio?)
- Tokio is the head of the Shimura (Genbu) clan, a family of demon fighters that has protected K City for 20 generations (Tokio is the 21st head of the clan). He is empowered to fight demons thanks to the demon Catoblepas imprisoned within his eye, which was passed down to him by his father. Catoblepas allows Tokio to freeze the time of any object he looks at (confirmed not to work on living beings); freezing an object in time makes it indestructible, allowing Tokio to turn almost anything into a weapon. Catoblepas also allows Tokio to end people's "time of life," aka their lifespan. When he unleashes this power, anyone who looks into Tokio's eye for five seconds dies, instantly dissolving into dust. This last power is granted by a poison contained in Tokio's body and is considered one of the greatest poisons ever, making Tokio immune to most poisons. Catoblepas can also emerge from Tokio's eye to aid him in the midst of battle, and causes Tokio to bleed from his eye when other demons are nearby. He is very laid back, enjoys anime, and never looks people directly in the eye and only leaves his temple to deal with Yoma. Can synchronize with Catoblepas which causes his body to change appearance and half his hair to turn white. Doing so is dangerous as Catoblepas could sieze control of his body. Wishes to kill his brother, Tokiho.
- Miko Kishida (岸田 美依子/ミーコ Kishida Miko/Miko?)
- She is a normal female high school student, but finds herself involved in a demon extermination triggered by what was labeled as a disturbance. She was also saved by Tokio from demons, She met Tokio at the train station. Her parents run a fruit shop, "Kishida Fruit". She is easily scared, and a considerable glutton. She speaks in Kansai dialect.
- Mari (マリ Mari?)
- A friend of Miko who tells her stories about the strange things happening around K City.
- Hakutaku (白澤圖 Hakutaku?)
- The eldest of the Shimuras' servants; his appearance is that of a cow-like figure with a mask (on which is written the word "hakutaku") on his face, the cow-like figure seems to be due to the fact that he is always crouching. He is powerful enough to avoid a ancient spell easily. He is somehow a "knowledgeable person" in that he apparently knows everything. He seems to never go out, but he knows the faces of his neighbours. He usually walks slowly, but when in a hurry he appears as if he were floating in the air. It is revealed that he is in control of a very strong Youma and is also the kekkai for the House of Shimura. He possesses a gold drivers license.
- Kazuto Hosomi (細美 一燈 Hosomi Kazuto?)
- The present head of the Hosomi (Suzaku) household, and as such a distant relative of Tokio. He controls a Yoma called Masoho Sonidori (真朱鴗鳥?), with the appearance of a flaming bird, which he keeps inside his hair; it allows him to fly and to throw flaming attacks. He thinks Miko is a pervert because she keeps trying to look Tokio in the eyes. He likes to he flashy, loses his cool easily and lectures people for hours when they do something he doesn't like.
- Michiru Kuramochi (倉持 みちる Kuramochi Michiru?)
- The next head of the House of Kuramochi (Seiryuu), and another distant relative of Tokio. Her family commands the Yoma Shakaraou who's appearance matches the strength and power of its master (appeared first as a dragon then later as a pokemon-ish creature) and controls water and can heal others, it is located on her chest. She gets easily flattered when complimented and appears to have low self-esteem. Her grandmother was the previous head,
- Nanao Mitsuki ?? ?? Mitsuki Nanao
- A servant of House of Hosomi and one of Kazuto's closed aides, very hyper and optimistic. However, is very serious in battle. A Yoma arts user, commands the Yoma Ginboshi (Silver Star)which looks like a fish with stars on it and turns any object Nanao tuoches into a bullet. When he was young, Kazuto saved him when he was in a fire that killed his parents, thus he claims he has died once and was then reborn. Told Miko to call him Mikki
- Yoshi Touji ?? ?? Touji Yoshi
- Another servant of House of Hosomi and another of Kazuto's closest aides, wears sunglasses and has a tattoo on his chin. Commands the Yoma Raikiri (Thunder Cutter) which appears as a sword with a lightning bolt on the blade and a circular guard. Can cut anything it touches including a scabbard, thus Touji uses his own body as its scabbard. Touji is incredibly fast a an expert swordsman.
[edit] Stage setting
K City is probably modelled after Kyoto, as the dialect spoken by some of the characters and the names of the places apparently suggest. The subway appearing in the first chapter is probably modelled after Kyoto municipal subway Karasuma Line and 3200 Kintetsu system trains; Maro Tamachi station is probably a parody of Marutamachi Station.
