[edit] Change to Italian penninsula?

Would it be better to have this topic be about the Italian Penninsula rather than Italy proper? That way We could include San Marino. Before Italian unification, it was really no different than any other nearby state, but it gets left off of this list. Also, Vatican City was part of Italy for a while, now it isn't, so it doesn't get included, but really should.

Yeah clearly that would be better. Surely the whole point of the article is that - look it hasn't always been italy! there were loads of independent states around. The current italian borders are less static than the penninsular itself, so the latter should be used as the catchment area.

San Marino was clearly a historical state of Italy prior to 1861. It's only after that that a distinction between the "Italian Peninsula" and "Italy" makes any sense. john k 19:38, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
